Eugene is in a great spot for exploring. There are so many cool places to visit nearby. I’ve found some awesome day trips that are perfect for getting away without going too far. These trips let me see new sights and have fun adventures. I always come back feeling refreshed.

Scenic Drives and Nature Trails
I always enjoy taking a drive along the McKenzie River Scenic Byway. The winding road follows the river through lush forests and past waterfalls. It’s breathtaking in any season.
For hiking, I recommend the trails at Spencer Butte. The views from the top are amazing – you can see the entire Willamette Valley on a clear day.
Another favorite spot is Hendricks Park. It’s right in Eugene and has beautiful gardens and forest trails. I love visiting in spring when the rhododendrons are blooming.

Eugene’s natural areas are teeming with wildlife. I often spot deer, rabbits, and many bird species on my walks. At Delta Ponds, I’ve seen herons, osprey, and even river otters.
The plant life here is diverse too. In the forests, I admire towering Douglas firs and western red cedars. Wildflowers bloom in meadows and along trails in spring and summer.
I’m always in awe of the ancient trees in old-growth forests like those at H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest. Some of these giants are over 500 years old!

Nearby towns like Salem have their own unique pasts. I found out that Salem, about 66 miles north of Eugene, is the state capital. It’s a great spot for history buffs.
On my trips, I saw old covered bridges scattered around Lane County. These bridges tell stories of early settlers and their way of life.

Eugene is home to many cultural spots. The University of Oregon campus has beautiful old buildings and museums. I loved visiting the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art there.

I highly recommend Cape Perpetua for hiking. It’s about an hour and a half drive from Eugene. The area has 26 miles of trails with ocean views and forest paths.
My favorite hike there is Devil’s Churn. It’s a 1.6-mile loop where I can see tide pools up close. The scenery is breathtaking!
For biking, I like to head to the McKenzie River Trail. It’s about an hour from Eugene. The trail offers stunning views of waterfalls and old-growth forests.
Water Sports and Activities
When I’m in the mood for water fun, I go whitewater rafting on the McKenzie River.
It’s only an hour’s drive from Eugene. There are many tour companies along Highway 126 that offer day trips.

The rush of paddling through rapids is unforgettable!
For a calmer experience, I enjoy kayaking on Fern Ridge Reservoir.
It’s just 15 minutes from Eugene. The calm waters are perfect for a relaxing day out.
